(Re)production of the canon in the 20th century architectural historiography: critical analysis

The thesis (Re)Production of the Canon in the 20th Century Architectural Historiography: Critical Analysis deals with the topic of the architectural canon and especially on a critical reflection on the principles of its formation. The thesis presents the theoretical background and argumentation appearing in both foreign and czech texts (published from the second wave of feminism to the present) that view the architectural canon and the interpretation of architectural history critically - primarily through the cathegory of gender. The analytical part of the thesis focuses on a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of syllabi for survey courses on the history of architecture taught at Czech universities, with the aim of answering the research question: How is the history of 20th century architecture taught at universities in the Czech Republic - and to what extent is it a history that takes into account the creative contribution of women? Chosen Aspects of Light in Sacred Architecture

Different approaches to the light is emblematic reflection of the current era and it´s cultural a social aspects. The materials are still being developped but the light is everlasting participant of the architecture. The light is basic element which each architect or artist must confront and use it. Due to this we can watch the work with light, analyse it´s use during the ages of the sacred architecture. The work of an architect is situated in the intersection of theoretic and technical fields of human activities. It´s necessary that the artist or architect knows the theoretic aspects of the light but also that knows real numeral values of the coming light. It is good to know the reasons why and for what was the light used in the past and it´s also needed to have a knowledge how much of the light was used in the liturgical space. How much of the light was used in the interior in the past and how much do we use it nowadays? Is it possible to analyse the tendency in the use of the natural light? These questions are useful in forming new liturgical spaces also in nowadays. The first part of this work is focused on the theoretic aspects of the light (liturgy, theology, psychology and ergonomics). The second part of the work describes the measurements of the intensity of the natural light in the sacred spaces in the different selected churches. The conclusion compares different measured values in each sacred building and the results are included to the larger scientific and historical context. The aim of this work was to evaluate specific interior lightning conditions by unified methodology and to apply it on the larger scientific experience which regards the architectonical practice and the forming of the liturgical spaces.

Architect Jan Vejrych and his works

The thesis deals with the life and work of an eminent architect of the late 19th and early 20th century, a native of Horní Branná near Jilemnice, Jan Vejrych. Forty years of his extensive and diverse project and construction activity has left its mark both in Prague and in many places in Bohemia and, by implementation of a project of the National House in Maribor, Slovenia, it has also acquired an international dimension. The aim of the text is to offer a comprehensive view of Vejrych's life and professional activities and thus fill one of the gaps in the knowledge of architecture of the late 19th and early 20th century in the Czech lands. The thesis primarily focuses on the analysis of Vejrych's architectural work. When mapping his projects the aim was to place them consistently in the broader art-historical and socio- political context. The works are not only analyzed within each creative period, the evolution of selected building types is traced over time as well. Attention is paid to interior designs, which were an integral part of major projects, as well as to sketches and studies created for architect's own use where his general observations and comments on various aspects of architectural work can be found.
